The power of cameraphones

Not so long ago, mobile phones were used for making phone calls, or sending text messages. Later, you could buy mobile phones with an inbuilt camera, but it served more as a novelty, and any more serious photography than a blurry shot of your friends required a separate digital camera, purchased for more money than you would have liked to have spent, and forgotten at home whenever anything surprising or picture-worthy happened.

Now, mobile phones come with an inbuilt, high-quality camera. They're more portable than digital cameras. and you can upload your photos to the Internet with ease. One of the first affordable digital cameras was the Kodak DC40, released in 1996, which came with just a third of a megapixel. Now, popular smartphones like the iPhone 4S or the BlackBerry Bold 9790 pack 8 megapixels, along with a host of  additional features like sophisticated flash mechanisms, special lenses and artistic photo editing software. What's more, the iPhone or BlackBerry Bold price is significantly less than you would have paid for the digital camera alone all those years ago.

It's not just photos of our pets or children, either. Along with social media, cameraphone pictures have played a major role in the transmission of news stories such as the Arab Spring. Police brutality captured on film by Egyptian social media activists caused millions of protestors to take to the streets to demand the end of dictatorial regimes.

Furthermore, a recent study from the Netherlands showed that cameraphones can play a vital role in medical diagnostics, especially in remote or rural areas. The study by Coosje Tuijn of the Royal Tropical Institute showed that a two megapixel camera can capture clear microscopy images that could be sent to a website for analysis by a specialist. The specialist could then email or SMS feedback back to the patient. "Such technological advances could improve diagnosis in peripheral health settings by empowering under-educated and insufficiently experienced health care and laboratory workers to meet quality standards," concluded Tuijn.

The increasing accessibility, versatility and sharability of mobile photography indicates that this is only the tip of the iceberg of what we can expect from cameraphones, and the coming months and years will only continue to demonstrate their power.

lots of problem to Go Daddy and other SOPA supporters.

Redditors have created anti-SOPA website, chrome extension, Android and iOS

apps against SOPA.

Reddit admins announces this protest in a blog post

"We’re as addicted to reddit as the rest of you. Many of you stand with us
against PIPA/SOPA, but we know support for a blackout isn’t unanimous. We're
not taking this action lightly. We wouldn’t do this if we didn’t believe this
legislation and the forces behind it were a serious threat to reddit and the
Internet as we know it. Blacking out reddit is a hard choice, but we feel
focusing on a day of action is the best way we can amplify the voice of the
community."

Mobile doctors : All You Need To Know

PDAs and smartphones are making the life of doctors much easier, with fast access to medical digital libraries and storage of complex files. Doctors can also access drug reference databases, treatment guidelines, clinical and medical references, product updates and medical news.

Even though PDAS and smartphones were originally designed to aid work in the business and corporate world, the development of specialities software and applications have made it possible for those devices to become a work tool for professionals from a variety of backgrounds. According to research carried out by Manhattan Research, around 64% of American doctors use smartphones and PDAS at work. In this community, BlackBerries devices are the most common.

This phenomenon is yet to catch on in India, where only 15% of doctors regard their smartphone as essential for their profession, according to a report by Research at Tavess. The report remarked that although Indian doctors are not immune to the benefits of new technology, India's large proportion of older and rural doctors means that they are unfamiliar with how to use smartphones.

This problem could be addressed with the provision of phones that are easy to use, and have intuitive interfaces. For example, the BlackBerry Bold 9790 features both a classic QWERTY keyboard and a responsive touchscreen, which maximises its usability. The BlackBerry Bold priceis also in a reasonable range for doctors.

In addition to this, Tavess Research recommend initiatives that give an opportunity to 'try' and get 'educated', to overcome the barrier of unfamiliarity.

There are a number of provisions already in place in mobile, which Indian doctors ought to harness. Currently, Mobile PDR, Skyscape, Mobile Micromedex, Lexi-COMPLETE, Thomson Clinical Xpert, Mobile MerckMedicus and MDConsult Mobile are the most widely used drug reference resources on mobile. On the app front WebMD, UpToDate, MDConsult Mobile, MedScape, etc. are apps most widely used by physicians.

The debate: QWERTY vs. touchscreen

QWERTY or touchscreen - which do you prefer? The debate rages on, and a consensus is yet to be reaches.

PDAs with touchscreens have been around for years, but not until the launch of the iPhone in 2007 did the technology really become usable, and the craze really take off. However, the iconic QWERTY keyboard still retains its popularity, and the divide has become a source of contention between mobile users.

The debate: QWERTY vs. touchscreen

Touchscreens offer a number of advantages. The QWERTY keyboard was originally developed to slow down typists in the days when print hammers could get tangled - touchscreens abandon these outdated concerns. The sleekness and simplicity of just one screen is also better suited to devices largely used for consuming rather than inputting content. However, many tech aficionados complain that touchscreens lack the tactile familiarity of a real keyboard, as well as slowing down the speed at which emails or text messages can be sent off.

If you do prefer keyboards, there are still a number of factors to consider. Keys are large enough for your fingers, enough space between the keys, and the amount they depress can all affect how easy the keyboard is to use. Keyboard phones are also likely to be wider than those with a touchscreen, so if compactness is important for you, you might want to think again.

If you're still undecided, perhaps the best bet is a phone that combines the convenience of a touchscreen with the old-school reliability of a QWERTY keyboard. A number of phones tap into this need - for example, the new BlackBerry Bold 9790 (otherwise known as the BlackBerry Bellagio) offers a responsive touchscreen as well as the classic BlackBerry QWERTY keyboard. A number of Android phones also offer both input methods, but it's unlikely that Apple are ever going to ditch the touchscreen-only build that's brought them so much success and inspired so many copycats.
